Teaching English as a Foreign Language

There are many reasons to start teaching English as a foreign language. On this site, I share mine, as well as original lesson plans, insights into the TEFL world from my perspective, and other useful resources for my fellow ESL teachers.

Why choose teaching English as a foreign language?

The world is rife with opportunities for foreign language teachers. Whether you love it or hate it, English is the new lingua franca of the world. In business, on social occasions, and across industries, the commonly spoken language is English. It’s a language candidates want to be able to show off on their CV while job hunting, it makes international travel far easier, and it opens doors to a range of other opportunities for language learners.

TEFL teachers are fortunate enough to share our language through our work and open doors for our students.

How easy is it to become a foreign language teacher?

If English is your first language, you already have one of the most sought-after prerequisites for most English language learners. And while becoming a TEFL teacher may have significant impacts on your personal life (such as moving countries), the qualification itself is fairly achievable.

Courses to qualify as a TEFL teacher range from between 120 hours to 160 hours, and can be done both online and in-person. Generally, the courses are also fairly affordable for the average person, particularly when considering the opportunities you can have as a result. An in-person TEFL course in Barcelona costs €1,650 on average.
